The Difference Between Turbo And Supercharged, Turbo And Supercharged Which Is Better

There are two main ways to supercharge the engine, one is turbocharging, and the other is mechanical supercharging. The two supercharging methods are different, but the principle is to increase the intake pressure and let more oxygen participate in the combustion of the mixed steam, thereby improving the power.

The difference between turbocharging and mechanical supercharging

Turbocharging increases the intake pressure through the exhaust gas driven supercharging device, and mechanical supercharging increases the intake pressure through the crankshaft driven supercharging device. Due to the different driving mode of the supercharging device, the characteristics of the two supercharged engines are also different.

The turbo is driven by the exhaust gas. The kinetic energy of the exhaust gas is not large enough at low engine speed, so the supercharging pressure is not as large as the downward suction of the cylinder piston. So turbocharging is no different from natural breathing at low engine speeds. When the speed increases and the kinetic energy of the exhaust gas increases, the turbocharging pressure of the turbine will gradually increase, exceeding the suction of the piston, so as to achieve the supercharging effect. The performance of the engine is a sudden increase in power.

The mechanical supercharging is driven by the crankshaft, so the supercharging effect can be achieved when the engine is still at low speed, and there is no turbine hysteresis. But under the action of the gearbox, the engine speed will not always increase. In many cases, when the speed reaches more than 100km/h, the speed is only 3000rpm, so the mechanical supercharging will not be as strong as the turbocharging in the middle and late acceleration.

Which is better: turbocharged or supercharged?

The supercharged family cars we see in life are basically turbocharged, because the characteristics of turbocharging are more suitable for our family cars. It not only makes full use of the kinetic energy of waste exhaust, but also has better effect at medium and high speed. And turbocharging has a wider range of displacement applications, from 1.0 to 6 - and 7-liter engines.

Supercharging is more suitable for high-end cars, because it needs crankshaft drive as well as air conditioning compressor, so the engine power loss will be relatively large, only suitable for large displacement engine. And because there is no turbine hysteresis in the mechanical supercharging, there will be no sudden intervention of turbocharging, and the power output is smoother.
